Metal Diary

Metal Diary is a first hand exploration of context executed in series 33 and 55 which contrast London and Kuwait. The metals that were used (tin, zinc and pewter) are locally sourced, low melting alloys melted on a regular stove. This allows for multiple revisions and rapid development of ideas, through the process of making. The resulting series of one off mini sculptures captures the fluidity of the process and play during making. This presents a close sense of malleability, unrestrained play, and an unapologetic exploration of form and context.

This technique of open-face-casting has been used to teach casting classes in Alwafi Foundry and introduce students to the accessibility of metal casting. Many of the students have used these classes as a stepping stone to start working with the foundry on their own design projects, contributing to one of Saffar’s goals of expanding design potential in Kuwait.
